Descriptif
The Stazzi are situated on a unique hillside south facing, surrounded by 7000sq.m of land, adjacent to Pittulongu residential area. They enjoy a spectacular view over the bay of Olbia, dominated by the Tavolara island. You can admire the sunrise from the sea and the sunset behind Mount Limbara. The main beaches are only 2 km away, reachable by a well asphalted road. According to the Regional Law 8/2015, Planning permission for restoration and extension has been obtained for the 2 projects, combined of 1 larger building “Stazzo” and 1 smaller annex building each, with the possibility to build, in the front, 1 or 2 swimming pools with sea view.
A short explanation of the history of the STAZZI:
From the beginning of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century, the region La Gallura was characterized by a type of building called STAZZO which nowadays is protected and graded as historical constructions.
The word STAZZO derives from the latin Statio, which literal means ‘Station’, a place to stay. Today, the word STAZZO means agricultural housing where an owner, Lu Patronu, (farmer) and his family reside. It is normally placed in the highest position to enable the farmer to survey his surrounding terrain and fields.
Typically in the old days, the 2 adjacent buildings had a further small annex called Pinnenti which served as a store or work room with its own external door.
The family farmhouse (STAZZO), always constructed as a rectangular, had thick walls made of old stones joined by mortar made from lime and clay.
The Stazzo rarely had more than 3 rooms. The 2 at either end were the bedrooms and the central room served as a living room as well as work space. . It had two external doors to ensure good ventilation as originally there were no windows.
The floor of the Stazzo tended to be stone, clay or mud.
These Stazzi never had proper foundation , built instead directly onto rock and stony ground.
The roofs were divided into 2 parts, supported by Juniper wood beams to which were attached sheets of reed. Later on curved tiles were used by those who could afford such luxuries.
Granite stone, readily available in Sardinia, was frequently used for door frames and arches, window supports and window sills.
Doors were constructed of wood, a stable door with the top section opening for extra
ventilation and light.
